Appleby Saddles 1,000th Winner In Britain With Glory Lily

Reigning champion trainer Charlie Appleby saddled his 1,000th British winner, Glory Lily (GB) (Shamardal), at Lingfield on Wednesday. The Godolphin conditioner sent out his first winner just nine years ago in July of 2013. He recently secured his second consecutive trainers' championship on the back of taking his first G1 2000 Guineas with Coroebus (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}). He also enjoyed a stellar Breeders' Cup meeting, sending out three winners--Modern Games (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the GI Breeders' Cup Mile, Rebel's Romance (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the GI Breeders' Cup Turf...

A field of 12 was declared Sunday for the fourth running of the £600,000 G3 Bahrain International Trophy to be run over the 2000 metres Friday, Nov. 19, at the Rashid Equestrian & Horseracing Club. Magny Cours (Medaglia d'Oro) was beaten less than one length into third behind the since-retired Lord Glitters (Fr) (Whipper) in last year's main event, and the US-bred galloper could be one of as many of four entrants this time around. The seven-year-old was victorious in the G3 Prix Perth at Saint-Cloud in 2021, but was...

Valiant Kinross Heads The Supporting Cast

LEXINGTON, KY--It's pretty pointless rolling back to the clock, to so very different an era, to contrive a blasphemous conflation between "the 'F' word" and "the 'S' word." But even if we leave the polemics over Flightline (Tapit) and Secretariat to run their trite course to futility, in one respect the 39th Breeders' Cup made it feel just like old times for the Europeans, as well. True, a similar caveat should be applied to the notion that Godolphin and Ballydoyle here reprised the kind of rivalry that reached such intensity...

The Appleby Phenomenon

The Week in Review, by Bill Finley Winning Breeders' Cup races is supposed to be hard. Doesn't Charlie Appleby know that? The Breeders' Cup annually brings together the best trainers in the U.S. and many of the best in Europe. Wayne Lukas has won the most races, 20. Bob Baffert is next with 18. Chad Brown and Todd Pletcher are always forces. Aidan O'Brien brings a small army to the Breeders' Cup every year and has 16 winners to show for it, including three this year. But Appleby stands alone....

Appleby And O'Brien Repeat The Dose

LEXINGTON, KY--This was a day that seemed to hang suspended, if not quite on a single hair of his tail, then certainly on the fate of a single horse. Even the gale that blew through the afternoon had a portentous quality, as though the very elements were anticipating some complementary melodrama of wind and fire from Flightline (Tapit). Yet history is often made not to a blaring fanfare but in quiet increments--and the 39 steps taken by the Breeders' Cup since its inauguration in 1984 here brought the Europeans to...

Once A Dirt Demon, Now a 'Rebel' With a Cause On Turf

Rebel's Romance (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) began his 4-year-old season as Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum's best hope for the G1 Dubai World Cup, what with his towering success in the G2 UAE Derby as a sophomore. When things on the main track went belly-up over the winter at Meydan, trainer Charlie Appleby and team were compelled to call an audible and switched the gelding--clearly bred to handle the turf--to that surface. The decision has paid off in spades, as the lanky dark bay ran his grass record to five...

'Modern' Love In the Mile

If you decided to swallow the skinny-ish 6-5 about Godolphin's Modern Games (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) in Saturday's GI Breeders' Cup Mile, Sponsored by the Permanently Disabled Jockeys' Fund (PDJF) at Keeneland Saturday, hey--you actually got paid this time around. The striking chestnut, who exuded confidence and class throughout the week--as reported by TDN's Steve Sherack and Christie DeBernardis on site--steamed down the center of the Keeneland turf course once produced in upper stretch by William Buick and raced away for a second consecutive victory at the Breeders' Cup. Modern Games...

Home Comforts Help Euros To Away Treble

LEXINGTON, KY--Life in general, and life with horses in particular, simply doesn't dispense its favours with such an unstinting hand. Everybody understands that, and even an operation as lavishly resourced as Godolphin has over the years has experienced many moments of demoralization. Charlie Appleby and his team, moreover, will be perfectly aware that others must be expected in future. Before the afternoon was out, indeed, their second runner had been thwarted in a desperate finish by their rivals at Ballydoyle. By barely a nose, then, Appleby was denied a fifth...

Exceed and Excel's Mischief Magic Rallies to Win the BC Turf Sprint for Godolphin

LEXINGTON, KY--Godolphin's Mischief Magic (Ire) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) started off the Breeders' Cup action on an unseasonably warm and picture perfect day at Keeneland Friday in style with a late-rallying victory in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf. Dispatched at 6-1 in this 5 1/2-furlong event, the homebred was off slowest of all, leaving him trailing the field early. Meanwhile Speed Boat Beach (Bayern) and previously unbeaten Tyler's Tribe (Sharp Azteca) sped out to the early lead, dueling through a :21.65 opening quarter. American Apple (American Pharoah), a 51-1...
