Winter Weather Forces Another Cancellation at Laurel

The lingering effects of Winter Storm Landon combined with frigid temperatures and low wind-chill factors on the backside of the storm forced the cancellation of Saturday's live racing program at Laurel Park outside of Baltimore. Friday's card was called off after the afternoon's third race owing to deteriorating track conditions. Laurel, Pimlico, Rosecroft, and the MJC OTB Network were to remain open for simulcasting. Officials are hoping to conduct racing Sunday afternoon, Feb. 6.

Rain Forces Laurel Cancellation

Rainy conditions caused by Winter Storm Landon forced the cancellation of the live racing card at Laurel Park Friday afternoon following the third race. The first three races on the program were run over a sloppy and sealed main track. The weekly Stronach 5 wager, which was to begin with the eighth race at Laurel followed by races at Gulfstream, Santa Anita and Golden Gate, was also canceled. Cold Snap Prompts Oaklawn Cancellation

Officials at Oaklawn Park tweeted Thursday afternoon that racing and training would be canceled for Friday, Jan. 21 owing to extreme cold temperatures in and around Hot Springs. According to the tweet, the track intends to open for training Saturday, Jan. 22 and racing will go forward, with a first post time of 1 p.m. Central time. Officials anticipate returning to normal schedules Sunday, Jan. 23.

Officials at Santa Anita Park have made the proactive decision to cancel the program scheduled for this Thursday, Dec. 30, given a weather forecast that calls for additional significant rainfall in and around the track. As Laurel Park continues to face lock downs due to EHV-1, the Maryland track cancelled Friday's nine-race program as a number of horses entered on the Mar. 12 card are now under quarantine. The Maryland Jockey Club will try to have the remaining horses--that aren't under quarantine--from Friday's program fill cards on Saturday and Sunday. Laurel will remain open for simulcasting Friday. The New York Racing Association, Inc. has moved the entirety of Sunday's live racing program at Aqueduct Racetrack to Monday due a winter storm slated to impact the New York metropolitan area throughout the day on Sunday. Due to high winds and frigid temperatures, the New York Racing Association (NYRA) has canceled live racing Friday at Aqueduct Racetrack. The forecast, which calls for sustained high winds gusting as high as 39 mph, is expected to create wind chill factors as low as -5 degrees and will impact the New York metropolitan area. Aqueduct and Laurel Cancel Racing Due to Winter Storm

Aqueduct and Laurel both canceled their race cards Thursday after a winter storm hit the east coast Wednesday evening and continued into Thursday morning with rain, snow and heavy winds. In New York snow totals of 9 to 12 inches were expected with wind gusts reaching 50mph. There was also a coastal flooding warning for Queens. Keeneland Cancels Spring Meet Amid Coronavirus Pandemic

Having already canceled its 2-year-olds in training sale and subsequently announcing that racing would be conducted with no fans in attendance, officials at Keeneland have canceled the Spring race meeting set for Apr. 2 through Apr. 24 due to safety and health concerns surrounding the Coronavirus outbreak.
