Bay City Roller Finished for the Season after Champagne Heroics

Every day is a school day if you follow TDN. Thankfully, master of all subjects Emma Berry delivered yesterday's lesson on the Bay City Rollers--apparently one of the most popular bands of the 1970s--in her excellent Seven Days column, allowing me to stay in my lane with today's news that the unbeaten two-year-old colt of the same name is unlikely to run again this year after his comfortable victory in Saturday's G2 Champagne Stakes at Doncaster. That is according to trainer George Scott, who already has his sights set on...

New Bay's Bay City Roller Wins The Champagne For Victorious Racing

Doncaster's G2 Champagne Stakes lost a key actor on Saturday as Cheveley Park Stud's TDN Rising Star Chancellor (GB) (Kingman {GB}) was withdrawn at the start, leaving it to Victorious Racing's acquisition Bay City Roller (Ire) (New Bay {GB}--Bloomfield {Ire}, by Teofilo {Ire}) to extend his perfect sequence in the seven-furlong staging post. Always travelling smoothly tracking the free-running Righthere Rightnow (Fr) (Kodiac {GB}), the George Scott-trained Sandown and Chelmsford novice winner who had been sold by Clive Washbourn after his debut was sent forward by Callum Shepherd to take...

Callum Shepherd Wins Appeal Against 18-Day Ban

Jockey Callum Shepherd has won his appeal against the Kempton stewards that imposed an 18-day ban last month. Aboard Thorntonledale Max (GB) (Cityscape {GB}) in a handicap, Shepherd was said to have failed "to take all reasonable and permissible measures on a horse which would have finished outright first" after rival Flavour Maker (Ire) (Profitable {Ire}) dead-heated with Shepherd's mount. Shepherd "completely refuted" the allegation at the time and a British Horseracing Authority (BHA) independent panel met to adjudicate the decision on Tuesday morning. Shepherd insisted that his mount had...

Summer Mile Win for Kingman's Quddwah

Maintaining his unbeaten record in straightforward fashion, Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum's Quddwah (GB) (Kingman {GB}--Sajjhaa {GB}, by King's Best) registered a career-best on Saturday in Ascot's G2 Anne Cowley Memorial Summer Mile. Held back from the Royal meeting with an abnormal blood count having won the Listed Paradise Stakes in May, the Simon and Ed Crisford-trained homebred travelled sweetly tracking the leaders on this return. Committed by Callum Shepherd passing two out, the 5-4 favourite had a comfortable half-length margin to spare over Ancient Rome (War Front) at the line....

Bahrain's Pride Isle Of Jura Heads to King George With Breeders' Cup on Wish List

There is no doubt that one of the feel-good moments in an excellent week of action at Royal Ascot came when Isle Of Jura (GB) (New Approach {Ire}) won the G2 Hardwicke Stakes on the final day of the meeting. Much of the joy that sprung from the result was aimed towards jockey Callum Shepherd after he had missed out on a plum ride in the Derby. But the importance of the win for the horse's trainer, George Scott, who was enjoying a first Royal Ascot success, and his owner...

Seven Days: Good for Ascot, Bad for Newmarket

Royal Ascot was tremendous in myriad ways. Sun up, crowd up, and a spread of results which drew in some of the world's biggest owners and trainers alongside syndicates and smaller yards. Then on Sunday morning came the news that QIPCO is to significantly reduce its sponsorship of British racing from next year. British Champions Day will still be run in its name, and the company owned by Sheikhs Hamad and Fahad Al Thani will remain as an official partner of Ascot racecourse, but Newmarket's Guineas meeting, Ascot's King George...

Talking Points: Emotions Run High As Shepherd Bags Breakthrough Royal Ascot Win

Isle Of Jura (GB) (New Approach {Ire}) stormed to a memorable Hardwicke victory on Saturday to provide trainer George Scott and rider Callum Shepherd with a breakthrough Royal Ascot success. The win was a timely one for Shepherd, who endured a hammer blow when losing the ride aboard Ambiente Friendly (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}), who would go on to finish second in the Derby.  Naturally, Shepherd was overcome with emotion after crossing the winning line in front aboard Isle Of Jura, who is owned by Bahrain's Victorious Racing and racked up...

Tweenhills Stud's first-crop sire Kameko (by Kitten's Joy) was off the mark on Wednesday as his son Wimbledon Hawkeye (GB) captured Kempton's seven-furlong novice for the Gredley Family who could be in for a big weeekend. Sent off at 28-1, the James Owen-trained son of the useful Eva Maria (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) was chased along early by Callum Shepherd behind the leading trio. Getting into gear in the straight, the homebred edged ahead of Ingot (GB) (Blue Point {Ire}) approaching the furlong pole and stayed on strongly to account...

Gleneagles' Ambiente Friendly Impressive In The Derby Trial

Relishing the step up to an extended 11 furlongs on Saturday, Ambiente Friendly (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}--Roxity {Ire}, by Fastnet Rock {Aus}) gave the Gredleys something to dream about over the next three weeks with a power-packed display in Lingfield's Listed Derby Trial. Keen initially for Callum Shepherd before enjoying cover behind the early leaders, the 8-1 shot moved to the front with two furlongs to race and left his rivals for dead from there. At the line, the James Fanshawe-trained 80,000gns Craven Breeze-Up purchase who had been fourth in the...
