Racing and equestrian stars will partake in the 2023 Treo Eile Christmas show on Thursday, Dec. 14 at the Emerald Equestrian Centre, including three-time Gold Cup winner Sizing John (GB) (Midnight Legend {GB}).
The first event on the show programme features the HRI Treo Eile Thoroughbred Classic, a team competition to showcase the best of Ireland's retrained racehorses, and it has attracted Rachael Blackmore, Jack Kennedy, Gary Carroll, and Patrick Mullins, among other notable stars, to captain the teams. The groups–consisting of a captain, two show jumping or eventing competitors, and a pony rider–will guide a variety of retired racers over a course of obstacles followed by a jump-off to decide the winners of the Horse Racing Ireland Perpetual Cup.
Sizing John's former jockey Robbie Power will reunite with his charge to try and add another award to their trophy cabinet alongside their three Gold Cups from 2017: the Leopardstown Gold Cup, the Cheltenham Gold Cup, and the Punchestown Gold Cup.
Power, who was involved in retraining Sizing John with his sister Elizabeth, said: “The Treo Eile Christmas show is a fantastic event and our family is delighted to be a part of it. Watching these horses turn their hand to a new job is very rewarding and says so much about their versatility.”
“When he is not enjoying his leisurely life hacking around, John loves competing–he showed it on the racecourse and at the Dublin Horse Show last August when he won the hotly contested ITM Racehorse to Riding Horse class with Kate Harrington on board. He will be primed and ready.”
