Over $24 Million Traded at Inglis

The fourth and final session of the Inglis Australian Broodmare and Weanling Sale wrapped up Wednesday with a clearance rate of 80% and over A$24 million in gross sales for 194 weanlings, 432 fillies and mares and two stallion shares.

“Vendors were rewarded by getting first crack at the weanling market and offering their fillies and mares to breeders wanting to buy at this sale so they can secure spots to the stallions that are quickly booking out at Australia's leading studs,” said Inglis' National Bloodstock Director Jonathan D'Arcy. “Good quality weanlings and broodmares have been well received with a lot of horses exceeding their reserves. Ending the sale with a total clearance rate of 80% for the week is a great start to the breeding stock sales season and we look forward to trading further weanlings and mares at the Great Southern Sale in June.”

Topping the final day of selling was listed stakes winner Bacchanal Woman (Aus) (Encosta de Lago {Aus}) (lot 710), who sold for A$340,000 to Andrew Perryman on behalf of Pan Sutong's Goldin Farms. Consigned by Widden Stud, the grey was in foal to Sepoy (Aus) (Elusive Quality). She will visit G1 Hong Kong Cup hero Akeed Mofeed (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), a resident of Goldin Farms in South Australia, in 2015.

“She's correct, with good bone, she's a quality horse with a great body to her, and she's a stakes-winning sprint mare, so it was obvious choice,” said Goldin Farms' Stud Manager Andrew Perryman. “We're supporting Akeed Mofeed heavily, but he is certainly open to outside mares as well. He covered a book of just over 70 mares last year with excellent fertility, and with this mare and the others we've picked up at Inglis this week he will get his chance.”

The second-highest lot on the day was Brand New Choice (Aus) (lot 734), a 4-year-old, who was snapped up by Widden Stud for A$300,000. In foal to Dawn Approach (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}), the Arrowfield Stud-consigned daughter of Redoute's Choice (Aus) is a full-sister to stakes winner Come Hither (Aus) and a half-sister to stakes winner Fun in Flight (Aus) (Fusaichi Pegasus). The bay will visit champion Australian juvenile Sebring (Aus) (More Than Ready), who holds court at Widden, this coming breeding season.

“We are thrilled to have purchased this mare in partnership,” said Widden's Stallion Nominations Manager Ryan McEvoy. “She was a city winner on debut, by Redoute's Choice. She is a half to two juvenile stakes winners and is from the immediate family of Not A Single Doubt (Aus) and Snippets (Aus).”

Added McEvoy, “She is going to make a mighty broodmare, like his recently retired Group 1 winner Bonaria, this mare will be another lovely daughter of Redoute's Choice visiting Sebring this season.”

Cressfield Stud consignee Absolutelyfabulous (Aus) (lot 690), a Group 3-winning daughter of Langfuhr, was purchased by Paul Willetts on behalf of Three Bridges Thoroughbreds for A$260,000, to take third-place honors Wednesday. In foal to More Than Ready, the G1 Myer Classic runner-up will visit group winner Unencumbered (Aus) (Testa Rossa {Aus}).

“We always come to Inglis for our broodmares, and this is the mare we have been waiting to buy the whole sale,” commented Three Bridges' Manager Toby Liston. “She's a great type of mare, after she foals down the More Than Ready she will visit our resident stallion Unencumbered which will be a perfect cross for her mating, so there are exciting times ahead.”

A Fusaichi Pegasus half-sister to the dam of Black Caviar (Aus), Baltics (Aus) (lot 715), was knocked down on a bid of A$150,000 to Gilgai Farm, the breeders of the undefeated champion. Eliza Park consigned the bay, who is in foal to the champion's sire, Bel Esprit (Aus).

At the conclusion of the select broodmare session Wednesday, the gross was A$3,927,600, for 102 sold and the average was A$38,506. The median was A$15,000. The general broodmare session grossed A$304,900 for 66 head with an average of A$6,776 and a median of A$2,000.

Across the four days of selling, seven weanlings sold for A$150,000 or greater and nine broodmares made in excess of A$300,000. The most active buyer was Damon Gabbedy's Belmont Bloodstock, who snapped up three weanlings for a total of A$151,000 and 21 broodmares for A$1,851,000. Arrowfield Stud was the leading vendor with 14 broodmares grossing $1,884,750, with Widden Stud taking the number two spot with 39 lots sold for A$1,559,650.
