As sales-goers return to Deauville in August for the first time in two years, the bloodstock community shares some of their favourite memories of the town.
TDN: Away from the sale, what is the one thing/place you enjoy most when you're in Deauville in August?
HDB: Probably visiting Le Brok cocktail bar, which I normally remember arriving at but seldom remember leaving.
TDN: Who's your favourite travelling companion(s) for the sales and why?
HDB:There are plenty of those but over the years I have to say Angus Gold for his singing skills and great company, Johnny McKeever for pure stamina, and Hugo Merry for his love of all the good things in life, starting with two dozen oysters in the fish market in Trouville.
TDN: Never mind tour rules; what's the funniest/most outrageous thing you've seen while there?
HDB: There are many but on one occasion a good friend and prominent bloodstock agent gave two fingers to the local police as they were driving past Le Drakkar. They immediately stopped and threw him in the back of the police van. He was released from jail the following afternoon and has kept his hand in his pocket ever since.
