Treble Group 2 winner Marmelo (GB) (Duke Of Marmalade {Ire}) will stand in Britain at Norton Grove Stud in 2022. The 2018 G1 Melbourne Cup runner-up has spent the last two seasons in France at Haras du Grand Courgeon.
Bred by Deepwood Farm Stud, the 8-year-old won seven of his 22 starts, with six of those wins coming in stakes company. He showed a particular penchant for France, winning the G2 Prix Kergorlay twice, the G2 Prix Maurice de Nieuil, and the G3 Prix de Barbeville.
Reflecting on his four-season career, the horse's trainer Hughie Morrison said, “Marmelo had a superb temperament, and was always easy to get fit being so clear-winded. When the Australian vets scoped him post-Melbourne Cup they couldn't believe the size of his windpipe. He was obviously one of the best stayers of his generation, but he also had the speed to hold the track record at both Chantilly and at York over the Ebor distance.”
Norton Grove Stud's Richard Lingwood added, “When he walked off the box I thought what a fine big horse he was. He is 16.2, dark bay with no white and looks a proper National Hunt type. One can see why he was such a good racehorse: he is so relaxed, and all he wanted to do was stick his head in his manger.”
Marmelo will stand for a fee £2,000, Oct. 1 terms.
