The unbeaten 'TDN Rising Star' Newspaperofrecord (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) entered Breeders' Cup weekend as one of the headliners off a pair of dominating performances, including Belmont's GII Miss Grillo S. Sept. 30, and ran to the hype with a scintillating, 6 3/4-length front-running tally as the 3-5 favorite in Friday's Juvenile Fillies Turf. East (GB) (Frankel {GB}) just tagged Stellar Agent (More Than Ready) late by a neck for second.
Trainer Chad Brown continues to dominate the Juvenile Fillies Turf, now winning it for the fifth time in 10 runnings. Brown's past winners are Maram (2008), Lady Eli (2014), New Money Honey (2016) and Rushing Fall (2017).
“I'm so proud of the filly,” Brown said. “We've educated her, trained her, developed her to get to this point, but she's doing all the work. She's a remarkable talent, and at this point, we just stay out of her way. I think that today she showed really the world would be tuning into a race like this today with an international event like it is, how good she really is. And for her to win as easy as she did is remarkable.
He continued, “I'm more reserved about saying superstar and such until they're a little deeper into their career and seeing how far they can really go. Obviously, this is a horse that's done everything we've asked and she's done it really easy. I don't think I've ever trained a horse that after their first three starts we never let her run. ”
Newspaperofrecord broke alertly from post six and quickly established command through early fractions of :24.06 and :48.58. Still waiting for her cue turning for home, she immediately responded with a devastating turn of foot when asked the question by Irad Ortiz Jr. and was geared down late while stopping the timer in 1:39 flat over the “yielding” going.
Newspaperofrecord earned her 'Rising Star' badge with a jaw-dropping 6 3/4-length debut win over the Saratoga lawn Aug. 19 and followed suit with an equally impressive 6 1/2-length, wire-to-wire tally in the Miss Grillo. Both of her races came over yielding ground as well.
This marked the first Breeders' Cup victory for longtime prominent owner Seth Klarman of Klaravich Stables. Klarman is CEO & President of Boston-based Baupost Group, a private investment partnership he founded in 1982. Along with William H. Lawrence, Klarman campaigns 2017 GI Preakness S. hero Cloud Computing (Maclean's Music).
“We've never won a Breeders' Cup race,” Klarman said. “So that's special. I think she's our most spectacular horse. We've never had somebody that emerged so quickly in her career, showed so much promise, and has fulfilled it. As soon as she broke clean, we were both, I think, pretty excited that she was going to do very, very well today.”
Newspaperofrecord was purchased for 200,000gns as a TATOCT yearling.
“Seth's given me an unbelievable amount of trust to really make the final call when we acquire horses or sell horses, and we have a team that helps us, led by Mike Ryan,” Brown said. “We decided to go over there and try the new market because we're always looking to change our model a little bit, and studying the races over here, yes, I've had success in this race before with the American-bred horses, but I also have a division of my stable where I get a lot of imported horses that we try to buy or owners just send to me from Europe.”
Pedigree Notes:
