Longtime Horseman Charles Nuckols III Passes Away

Charles “Nucks” Nuckols III, owner of Nuckols Farm, passed away Sept. 21. He was 78.

He is survived by his wife; Mary Jane; his son, Charlie Nuckols IV and partner Amanda Reardon; his son, Thomas Hunter Nuckols and spouse Stacey, grandchildren, Claire Alexandra and Thomas Elliott; his daughter Mary Dunlap and spouse Zachary Armgard, grandchildren, Bruce Ryker and Ashford Henry. He was preceded in death by Hetty Nuckols Gross, and survived by Judy Nuckols Offutt, and Jimmy Nuckols.

“Nucks” alongside his father bred and produced several champions including Mr. Leader, Distorted Humor, War Emblem in addition to standing 2001 Kentucky Derby winner Monarchos.

He was a two-time President of the Thoroughbred Club of America, Lifetime member and Director of the Keeneland Association and Secretary of the Kentucky Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association for many years.

A celebration of life will be held Friday, Sept. 27 at The Thoroughbred Club of America from 4:00 – 7:00pm, speaker begins at 4:30. Kerr Brothers Funeral Home -Main Street is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation to one of his favorite charities; Old Friends Thoroughbred Retirement, Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance and the Woodford Humane Society.
