Godolphin's Magic Hurricane wins G1 Metropolitan

Magic Hurricane | Racing and Sports

Having already won four stakes races, the might of Godolphin struck again in the final race of the day as Magic Hurricane (Ire) (g, 6, Hurricane Run {Ire} – Close Regards {Ire}, by Danehill {USA}) announced himself as a leading Cups contender by winning the G1 Metropolitan over 2400m. Second at his most recent start where Complacent (Aus) (who had won earlier in the day) finished third, the James McDonald-ridden Magic Hurricane (Ire) was the race day favourite in a field that contained only imported horses. Seventh on the rail, just inside the Chris Waller-trained Beaten Up (GB), Magic Hurricane (Ire) slowly crept forward and when the runs started to come he sliced through the field to hit the lead at the 100m mark. In what was a masterful ride, McDonald appeared to outsmart Glyn Schofield on Beaten Up (GB) who came wide on the turn while Magic Hurricane (Ire) took and inside run. Becoming the second Group 1 winner for his sire, Magic Hurricane (Ire) took the race by two lengths from Beaten Up (GB), with a further long head back to Havana Cooler (Ire) a stablemate to the winner in third. Race leader Orbec (Fr) fought all the way down the straight, finishing fourth. Holding nominations to the G1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) and the G1 Melbourne Cup (3200m), Magic Hurricane's winning time was 2.28.52 on the good rated track. Lifetime Record: 16-5-2-3, $668532. O-Godolphin. B- Messr P. &. E. Grogan. T-John O'Shea.
