Tattersalls's second online sale came to a close on Friday after two days of bidding, with the Donnacha O'Brien-trained 4-year-old colt Great House (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) (lot 12) topping trade of the Tattersalls August Online Sale with a bid of £175,000 from Highclere Thoroughbred Racing. Previously campaigned by the Coolmore partners, Great House made a belated debut when second in a Gowran Park maiden on June 17 and he got off the mark going a mile and a half at Limerick 12 days later. He looks likely to continue his career in Australia.
The Tattersalls August Online Sale attracted 16 entries, with one withdrawal before the start of the sale. Five of the 15 offerings sold for an aggregate of £590,000, at an average of £118,000 and a median of £135,000. Among those not meeting their reserves was the G2 Airlie Stud S. winner Aloha Star (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}), who was unsold at £600,000. The stakes-producing mare Solfilia (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}) was bought back for £340,000, while Sweety Dream (Fr) (Dream Ahead), a young stakes-winning mare in foal to Night Of Thunder (Ire), was a £330,000 buy back.
Also among those sold through the online platform, however, was the 7-year-old mare Akhania (GB) (Dalakhani {Ire}) with her Night Of Thunder colt at foot and in foal to Golden Horn (GB) (lot 1). The mare and foal combination fetched £155,000 from Alex Elliott.
Though small in number, the Tattersalls August Online Sale attracted attention from around the globe. Hong Kong-based owner Peter K. L. Chu swung for the 3-year-old colt Meaningful Vote (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}) (lot 6)-like Aloha Star from Fozzy Stack's yard-and secured the dual winner for £135,000. Two-year-old filly Inner Beauty (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) (lot 4), like Great House, broke her maiden at Limerick on June 29 before finishing fourth in both the G3 Coolmore Irish EBF Fillies' Sprint S. and the Airlie Stud S., and she will leave Ken Condon's yard and head for America after Joe Miller's Kern Thoroughbreds bought her on behalf of Tim Cohen's Red Baron's Barn and Rancho Temescal for £100,000. The same connections purchased the future Grade I winner River Boyne (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}) from the Tattersalls Autumn Horses-in-Training Sale in 2017.
“The whole Tattersalls Online Sale process went very smoothly and it is a well-constructed easy to use platform,” said Miller. “We were delighted to buy Inner Beauty for Tim Cohen who has always done well buying at Tattersalls, most notably with Grade I winner River Boyne.”
Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony said, “This was only the second Tattersalls Online Sale and the feedback has been extremely positive. The international participation was particularly encouraging with three of the five purchases set to continue their racing careers abroad in Australia, Hong Kong and the U.S.”
