Gimmethegreenlight Leads National Yearling Sale

The two-day Bloodstock South Africa National Yearling Sale drew to a close on Friday with trade at a satisfactory level despite the ongoing pandemic and political anxieties in the country. The aggregate of R102,470,000 (€5,974,884/£5,175,174) was up from R87,065,000 (€5,075,345/£4,397,155) in 2020, and while the average dipped 6% to R276,946 (€16,144/£13,986), the median was up to R200,000 (€11,658/£10,100) from R160,000 (€9,327/£8,080).

Young More Than Ready sire Gimmethegreenlight (Aus), currently the leading sire in South Africa, was the sale's leading sire by aggregate and supplied three yearlings who made in excess of R1,000,000 (€58,308/£50,504), including a colt out of triple Group 1 winner All Is Secret (SAf) (lot 351) who topped the sale on day two at R2,800,000 (€163,264/£141,412) when bought by Jehan Malherbe of Form Bloodstock. All Is Secret, South Africa's champion 2-year-old filly of 2012, is also the dam of the listed-winning Sovereign Secret (SAf) (Dynasty {SAf}). Gimmethegreenlight also supplied a seven-figure filly on the day in the form of Varsfontein Stud's lot 232, who was also bought by Malherbe. She is the first foal out of the listed-placed Scandola (SAf) (Fort Wood).

Also featuring on Friday was a colt by Twice Over (GB) who fetched R1,400,000 (€81,611/£70,706) from John Freeman. Lot 407, the son of Group 3 winner Cash Register (SAf) (Casey Tibbs {Ire}), is a half-brother to three stakes winners as well as the Group 1-placed Chat Ching (Saf) (Duke Of Marmalade {Ire}).
