German Derby Hero Kamsin Dies At 19

Kamsin | Haras de la Baie

German Derby hero Kamsin (Ger) (Samum {Ger}) has died at the age of 19, Jour de Galop reported on Friday. A resident of Haras de la Baie in 2024, the dual purpose stallion stood for €2,500 this year.

“We found the stallion dead in his box in the morning,” said stud representative Andre-Jean Belloir to the JDG. “At night, he ate his ration and everything seemed normal.”

Bred by Gestut Karlshof, the half- or full-sibling to four black-type horses raced in the colours of Stall Blankenese and was trained by Peter Schiergen. Placed in one start at two, he won his maiden by nine lengths first out at Krefeld in March of 2008, before taking the G3 Fruhjahrspreis des Bankhaus Metzler in May. After his G1 Deutsches Derby victory two starts later, he ran second–promoted to first–in the G1 Rheinland-Pokal der Sparkass that August and added the G1 Grosser Preis von Baden in September. Unplaced in the 2008 G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, he opened 2009 with a victory in the G2 Gerling-Preis.

Retired with a mark of 13-6-1-0, and earnings of $996,940, the son of group winner Kapitol (Ger) (Winged Love {Ire}) stood in Germany beginning in 2011 before spending 2017-2020 in France. After three seasons at Annshoon Stud in Ireland (2021-2023), he returned to France for 2024. Group winners Nica (Ger), Ladykiller (Ger), and Lips Queen (Ger) feature among his six Flat stakes winners. Over jumps, Kamsin has sired On The Go (Fr), the winner of the 2018 G1 Grand Steeplechase de Paris, as well as Imbatable Du Seuil (Fr), Nosferatu (Fr), and Libeccio (Fr).
