Galileo's Clemmie Takes the Duchess of Cambridge

Clemmie (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who backed up a May 27 debut third at The Curragh by finishing seventh in a hot renewal of Royal Ascot's June 23 G3 Albany S., lined up for Friday's G2 Duchess of Cambridge S. at Newmarket off a breakthrough score in the July 2 G3 Grangecon Stud (Balanchine) S. back at The Curragh and justified 11-8 favouritism with a degree of panache to register a career high–in track record time– in her fourth straight try at this six-furlong trip. Positioned under a modicum of cover tracking the leaders in sixth after breaking alertly, she was stoked up at the quarter-mile marker and ran on strongly in the closing stages once powering to the fore at the foot of the hill to comfortably account for 7-4 market rival Nyaleti (Ire) (Arch) by 1 3/4 lengths, with 20-1 chance Mamba Noire (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) a half-length further back in third. “She is typical of Aidan [O'Brien]'s 2-year-olds and has progressed with every run,” explained winning rider Ryan Moore. “She has just got better and better. She was good in the Group 3 last time and was better today. She did that very easy with plenty to spare and I'd say she's the best [juvenile] filly we've seen out this year. She has the pedigree to do it [in next year's G1 1000 Guineas], she's with the right trainer and, if she can win a six-furlong Group 2 in July, she's got every chance.”

Clemmie is out of G2 Queen Mary S. runner-up Meow (Ire) (Storm Cat) and is a full-sister to a yearling colt and to stablemate and four-time Group 1-winning European highweight 2-year-old colt Churchill (Ire). Her second dam is dual British highweight sprinter Airwave (GB) (Air Express {Ire}), whose career highs featured victories in the G1 Cheveley Park S. and G2 Temple S., and who produced G3 Denny Cordell Lavarack & Lanwades Stud Fillies' S. victress Aloof (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Airwave's ill-fated half-sister is G1 Nunthorpe S. heroine Jwala (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}).
