Frostmourne Flies Home in Penn Mile

Frostmourne | A Coglianese

A first-out winner at Saratoga last September, Frostmourne settled for fourth in the GIII Pilgrim S. Oct. 1 behind subsequent GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf winner and Saturday's GIII Pennine Ridge S. hero Oscar Performance (Kitten's Joy), but bounced back to take the Awad S. over yielding ground back in Elmont 28 days later. Frostmourne was second on seasonal debut to Pennine Ridge seventh Secretary At War (War Front) in the Big A's Woodhaven S. Apr. 22.

Frostmourne showed speed from the eight hole before tucking into a mid-pack spot as a duel percolated between Time to Travel (Hard Spun) and Cistron. That pair was clocked in splits of :23.00 and :47.53 and started to come back to the field turning for home as Frostmourne inched closer out wide still under a snug hold. The eventual winner took a few strides to get his feet underneath him as they straightened, but soon kicked it into high gear and swooped past his competition with a powerful run. Favored Big Score also closed nicely to complete the chalky exacta.

Pedigree Notes:

Richard and Sue Ann Masson's Green Lantern Farm purchased the winner's dam Leaning Tower (Theatrical {Ire}) for $175,000 as a Fasig-Tipton July yearling in 1997. She went winless in four tries out in California, but has more than repaid her owners in the breeding shed, particularly as a producer of talented turf milers. Speedy Karelian annexed the 2010 GI Maker's Mark Mile for Rusty Arnold, while Colgan's Chip checked in second by a nose in that same year's GII Oak Tree Mile S. at Hollywood Park under the tutelage of Craig Dollase. Leaning Tower is a half to the likes of Canadian champion, Queen's Plate and Breeders' S. winner Basqueian (Bounding Basque). Leaning Tower is her last known foal.
