With a trip to the GI Breeders' Cup Classic on the line, it was Dornoch (Good Magic–Puca, by Big Brown) who punched his ticket in the GI NYRA Bets Haskell Stakes at Monmouth Park on Saturday afternoon.
A 3-1 shot here, the colt from the bell vied for the lead along the rail into the first turn. Shrugging off a challenge from Timberlake (Into Mischief), the GI Belmont Stakes champ established his lead up the backstretch. With favorite Mindframe (Constitution) looming large around the far turn, the Danny Gargan trainee responded and down the lane was able to outlast his opponent to seal the deal.
The final running time was 1:50.31.
Belmont Stakes winner #1 DORNOCH ($8.80) and runner-up Mindframe fight down the stretch in the $1 million Haskell Stakes (G1), but Dornoch refused to be beaten!
