Domestic Product Much the Best in Dwyer

Domestic Product | Coglianese

Domestic Product (Practical Joke), a forgettable 13th after getting pinched at the start in the GI Kentucky Derby, showed no mercy on his three rivals in Saturday's GIII Dwyer Stakes at the Big A.

Turning back to a one-turn mile, the 3-5 favorite stalked the early leaders from an outside third. He launched while three deep entering the far turn, hit the front as they straightened for home and blasted off to score by 7 1/2 lengths over Hades (Awesome Slew). The pacesetter Billal (Street Sense) was third.

“He was traveling very well,” winning jockey Flavien Prat said. “I felt in control the whole race and he responded really well turning for home. He took a very nice breather around the turn– I didn't know how much the leader [Billal] had left, but when I called on him, he responded very well.”

Prat added, “I do think he's better with the cut back in distance.”

Domestic Product, a maiden winner going nine furlongs over this same surface at second asking last October, kicked off his sophomore campaign with a good second at 14-1 behind Hades in the GIII Holy Bull Stakes Feb. 3, then eked out a narrow victory in a paceless renewal of the GIII Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby Mar. 9. Beaten 22 3/4 following an eventful journey on the first Saturday in May, Domestic Product was a distant second in the NYRA Bets Pegasus Stakes at Monmouth Park last out June 15.

Pedigree Notes:

Klaravich homebred Domestic Product is one of 27 graded winners and 38 stakes winners worldwide for Practical Joke. He is the lone graded winner for broodmare sire Paynter.

The unraced Goods and Services, the Dwyer winner's dam, sold at the 2021 Keeneland November sale for $37,000 to Railway Street when Domestic Product was a weanling. The mare produced a 2022 filly by Complexity in New York and aborted to Honest Mischief for 2023.
