In response to the nearby Lilac Fire displacing numerous human and animal populations in San Diego County, Del Mar Fairgrounds opened its stable area to horses from evacuated areas. In a message posted on the Del Mar Racetrack Twitter page, the track encouraged evacuees to bring bedding, feed and horse identification to make the process go smoothly.
As fires continue to ravage areas of Southern California, Del Mar follows in the footsteps of Fairplex in the greater Los Angeles area, which had 23 horses residing in their barn area as of Thursday morning.
For more information about emergency stabling at Fairplex, evacuees can call 909-865-4600, while Del Mar Fairgrounds can be contacted at 858-755-1161.
