Study Of Man Gets Dublin Go Ahead

Next Saturday's G1 QIPCO Irish Champion S. has been decided as the objective for Study Of Man (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) after connections eschewed probably an easier option closer to home in the following day's G2 Prix Niel at ParisLongchamp. The Pascal Bary trained colt looked set for a glorious season when winning the G1 QIPCO Prix du Jockey Club at Chantilly in June and on the face of it was quite disappointing when a well-beaten third to Knight To Behold (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) in the G2 Prix Guillaume d'Ornano Haras...

Taking Stock: From Retired Bleeder to Grade I Winner

"Give me your tired, your poor / Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free," wrote the poet Emma Lazarus. Those words from a sonnet were later inscribed on the Statue of Liberty and are synonymous with the ethos of the United States of America. They are applicable to racing here as well. The U.S. is still the only major racing country that allows race-day Lasix, a diuretic that helps control exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH), or bleeding in the lungs and airways. As a result, bleeders from abroad frequently find second...

His Body, Not His Spirit, Broken In Spill, Espinoza Vows to Return for BC

Wednesday was a big day for Victor Espinoza. For the first time since July 22 he was able to get a haircut, shave and change his clothes. For the jockey who was briefly paralyzed in a training accident at Del Mar, it was a meaningful step forward toward once again living a normal life. He was able to clean up because the doctors removed the neck brace he had been wearing since the spill. "I looked like I was homeless," he said. "My hair is so long and so is...

Nolan Becoming A Man For All Seasons

By Daithí Harvey Peter Nolan Bloodstock is a consignment that has shot to prominence at national hunt sales in what seems a very short space of time and Nolan is hoping his first big flat consignment at Tattersalls Ireland's Ascot Yearling Sale next week will be a springboard to a greater presence at similar sales in the future. The Wexford man will offer a draft of 10 colts at the second edition of the Ascot Sale held on Tuesday and was encouraged by the success he had at the inaugural...

Enable Back On Saturday

By Daithi Harvey Its probably fair to assume that when John Gosden chose the G3 September S. at Kempton on Saturday as the comeback run for Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}), he would have been surprised if the brilliant filly wasn't the highest rated performer in the 5-runner field. That accolade belongs to Crystal Ocean (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), rated a pound superior to the Juddmonte filly and surprisingly pitched in by his trainer Sir Michael Stoute to form an intriguing and unexpected clash in what is normally a relatively...

Siyouni On Top As Osarus Posts Increases

LA TESTE DE BUCH, France—A steady start on the opening day gave way to much more buoyant trade during the second and final session of the Osarus September Yearling Sale, with a top lot of €120,000 being the second-highest ever recorded at this auction and significant boosts in median and average. The stallion name at the top of the list was a familiar one—Siyouni (Fr), who last week provided the co-top lost at the BBAG Sale in Germany—but the vendor and breeder of lot 167, Jose Delmotte of Haras d'Haspel,...

Long in the Making, Hopeful Win a Family Affair

Thanks in large part to its insular nature, horse racing is an institution with deep family traditions. It's pretty difficult to enter the game on your own and create a legacy, so when one does, it makes sense that they would want to pass that legacy on to the next generation in their lineage. Those who share our blood and name are most likely to feel the connection to and pride in our heritage of racing. Clans like the O'Briens at Ballydoyle, the Hancocks at Claiborne and the Farishes at...
