Botti Family's Class Act

MILAN, Italy--A giant racing mural outside Milan's iconic restaurant which bears his name ensures that the legendary Italian-bred Ribot won't be forgotten any time soon. And while the Italian racing and breeding industry continues to face funding problems, a reminder of the country's breeders' ability to produce top-class horses has been issued this season via the dual Oaks victrix Sea Of Class (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}). Trained by William Haggas in the colours of the Tsui family's Sunderland Holdings, Sea Of Class was bred by Razza Del Velino, the...

On a balmy August morning, 27-year-old Clement stands in the center of his father's Saratoga stableyard, hands planted on his hips. Just a...

Thunder Makes Noise At Tattersalls Ireland

FAIRYHOUSE, Ireland--The first frost of the year chilled the air at Tattersalls Ireland over the weekend, but consignors and hopeful buyers kept warm over a chilly few days by viewing a catalogue which had received the most subscriptions in the September Yearling Sale's history. As the sale's graduates hit higher notes, so too do the turnover and the pedigrees of the individuals catalogued, which was demonstrated early on Tuesday. Lot 11 from the Castlebridge Consignment attracted plenty of attention on pedigree, being a three-parts brother to G1 Dubai World Cup...

TBA Urges Action to Aid Small Breeders

Following details released at its AGM in July, the Thoroughbred Breeders' Association (TBA) has renewed calls for a racehorse owners' premium scheme to reward British-bred horses, a step it feels is urgently required to halt the decline in the number of small breeders. The TBA revealed the findings of its second Economic Impact Study (EIS) in four years at a meeting in London on Tuesday. Among the results to have struck a warning note with the association is the fact that 66% of breeders surveyed in 2017 were found to...

Little Sign of Vertigo as Market Continues to Soar

Off the charts, no question. You just have to hope that it doesn't turn out to be off the rails, too. Indices measuring the business done at Keeneland over the past fortnight trail sparks and smoke. Pondering the state of the market before the September Sale, it had been clear that to maintain the arc set by Fasig-Tipton's summer yearling sales would require something "fairly historic." In the event, the market carried right on through the roof. The numbers strewn behind the world's biggest bloodstock auction represent the statistical equivalent...

Champion Good Magic Retired to Hill 'n' Dale

Last year's champion 2-year-old Good Magic (Curlin--Glinda the Good, by Hard Spun) has been retired and will join his sire at Hill 'n' Dale Farm. He will stand the 2019 season for a fee of $35,000. "Good Magic is a fantastic addition to our stallion roster," said John Sikura, president of Hill 'n' Dale. "It is rare indeed for a champion 2-year-old to retain his Grade I form at three, which was witnessed by Good Magic's narrow defeat by super horse Justify in the GI Kentucky Derby. We sold Good...

Mitchell Optimistic Progress Can Be Maintained

Tattersalls Ireland reported recently about the massive number of applications it received for the 845 slots available for this week's September Yearling Sale including Part II, with the auction house forced to turn down twice as many horses as catalogued. While on one hand such a scenario suggests there will be a lot of yearlings struggling to find new homes this year it also implies that Tattersalls Ireland should have been able to put together a catalogue as high on quality as it has ever done so. That theory is...

The Weekly Wrap: The Rascal Returns

The Derby can often take its toll on young Thoroughbreds and, according to William Haggas, it "knocked the stuffing out of" Young Rascal (Fr) (Intello {Ger]), who finished seventh at Epsom after winning the G3 Chester Vase. Bernard Kantor, for whom a Derby win would have been extra special as sponsor of the race for 10 years through Investec, gained some compensation in seeing his colt return in encouraging fashion at Newbury, where he won the G3 Dubai Duty Free Legacy Cup, formerly known as the Arc Trial, in testing...
