Invincible Spirit's Royal Meeting Best In the Criterium International

Godolphin's much-documented upturn continued apace at Chantilly on Sunday, when the Saeed bin Suroor-trained Royal Meeting (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) provided his sire with a weekend group 1 double in the Criterium International. Keen initially in third with Christophe Soumillon intent on getting a lead on the inexperienced Sept. 19 Yarmouth maiden winner, the 4-1 shot drifted left when sent in pursuit of Hermosa (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) but once straightened swooped on that 7-5 favourite 150 metres out en route to a 3/4-of-a-length success, with Graignes (Fr) (Zoffany {Ire}) a...

Cot Campbell Passes Away

Lifelong horseman W. Cothran Campbell passed away Saturday afternoon at his home in Aiken, South Carolina. He was 91. The founder of Dogwood Stable, and widely considered the progenitor of present day racing partnerships, Campbell developed the reputation of turning modestly priced horses into winners. Born Sept. 27, 1927 in New Orleans, Louisiana, Campbell began syndicating horses in 1969 shortly before launching the Dogwood partnership in Georgia. Based in Aiken, South Carolina since the mid-1980s, Dogwood Stable became irrevocably bound to the Palmetto State through the decades. With over 80...

Breeders' Cup Bulletin: Saturday, Oct. 27

In stark contrast to weather patterns plaguing the central and eastern part of the country, Saturday morning in Arcadia, California dawned sunny and warm as several Breeders' Cup contenders put in their final works ahead of the Championships next weekend. Small Time Goes Big

Ocala horseman Bert Pilcher figured a clever way to breed a Breeders' Cup favorite. Take a free mare, a free stallion season, foal an undersized pocket rocket dismissed by many, and turn loose one of the fastest horses we've seen in some time. That's the story of Imperial Hint (Imperialism), who has belied an unfashionable pedigree to become a dual Grade I winner...and the early choice to go one better than his second in last year's GI Breeders' Cup Sprint. "This little horse...he's a dream," Pilcher said of Imperial Hint,...

Magna Grecia In Charge At Doncaster

Bearing the mantle of leadership from Ballydoyle's legions for Saturday's G1 Vertem Futurity Trophy S., Smith, Magnier, Tabor and Flaxman Stables' Magna Grecia (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) had to go from boy to man in less than two minutes and roll up his sleeves to prevail in Doncaster's straight-mile test of juvenile staying power. Second to TDN Rising Star Persian King (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) in Newmarket's G3 Autumn S. over this mile trip Oct. 13, the 2-1 favourite raced in fifth early under Donnacha O'Brien with the stable setting a...

How the Breeders' Cup Was Born–and How to Heed New Challenges

He was a dreamer from Milwaukee and, after three years trying to be a trainer, still had only a handful of claimers in Chicago. Then one Sunday morning, driving into Hawthorne racetrack, Bobby Trussell noticed ash descending onto the windshield out of the dawn sky. He put his foot down and soon saw the flames in the clubhouse. When he arrived at the backstretch, cinders were sparking through the air and the fire crew were spraying the barn roofs. "What about the horsemen's office?" he asked. "All our papers are...

Futurity Is The Watchword

Saturday's European action sees the flat season issue one of its final flourishes with a host of prestige races across Britain, France and Ireland concentrated mainly on the 2-year-olds. It is a shame that the international race-planners could not avoid a clash between the G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud the G1 Vertem Futurity Trophy S., the latter of which re-adopts its old title before the Racing Post took up sponsorship in 1989. As ever, Ballydoyle have enough quality middle-distance Classic prospects for 2019 to spread around and have live chances of...

Japanese Apprentice Kimura Breaking New Ground at Woodbine

They come from all over the world to ride in North America and do so for obvious reasons--the racing and purses here are among the best on the planet. Jockeys from Latin American countries now dominate the sport and France has produced three of the top riders in the U.S. in Florent Geroux, Flavien Prat and Julien Leparoux. Now, a new country needs to be added to the list. There's very little, if any, history of a young jockey from Japan coming here and being successful. But that's exactly what...
