British Steroid Policy Set For March

Britain's enhanced zero-tolerance anabolic steroid policy is set to be implemented from Mar. 2, the British Horseracing Authority revealed yesterday. The policy was initially to go into effect Jan. 1, but the process was delayed in order to give the BHA further time to consult with industry stakeholders.  The BHA noted clarification and consensus had been reached with the Racehorse Owners Association, the National Trainers Federation and the Thoroughbred Breeders' Association on certain elements in the revised policy, including the definition of a “responsible person”--the person responsible for ensuring a...

Regu-Mate Cleared By Queensland Stewards

Queensland stewards have deemed, based on veterinary advice, that Regu-Mate is not an anabolic steroid, bringing to a close a saga that put a yearling purchased at last month's Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale under the threat of a racing ban after testing positive for the medication.  As part of random testing conducted prior to the sale by Racing Queensland of 20% of the yearlings offered, the unidentified colt was found to have altrenogest, a product found in Regu-Mate, in his system. When anabolic steroid reforms were made in...

Letter to the Editor: Mark Antonini

Now that the mental blur that is the holiday season has passed, I wanted to echo, and expand on, the sentiment of the publisher in his New Year's Eve letter, that the racing industry needs to do a better job of taking care of its people.  As an owner and breeder, I have a significant financial stake invested in each horse of mine that reaches the track. In December, I plan out a budget for each horse for the upcoming year. Beginning last year, with our first runner, we included...

The Association of Racing Commissioners International, in an attempt to crack down on the use of illegally compounded medications in racing will be tightening medications rules to ensure commissions have adequate authority to sanction violators of existing federal restrictions.  "Commission investigators are finding that some are seeking to circumvent existing doping rules by using new drugs created by combining multiple substances in a compound," ARCI President Ed Martin said in a statement.  "Existing federal rules requiring that compounded medications be dispensed only by veterinary prescription to address a specific medical...

Segenhoe Races Into A New Era

SEGENHOE RACES INTO A NEW ERA  By Kelsey Riley  As one of Australia's oldest Thoroughbred stud farms, Segenhoe Stud is one of the most recognizable names in the Australian Thoroughbred business. While Segenhoe may be old by name it is far from old-fashioned, however. The historic operation, which is busy preparing 17 yearlings for this week's Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, is on the cutting edge of modernity, recently doubling in size under new ownership and undergoing state-of-the-art renovations for both commercial and personal purposes.  “It's a management system...

MILL PARK MAKES WORTHWHILE JOURNEY  By Rob Burnet, Thoroughbrednews.com.au  It's a long way from Mill Park Stud in the southeast of South Australia to the Bundell sale complex of the Magic Millions Yearling Sale on the Gold Coast, but for Chris Watson it is a worthwhile trip to present Mill Park's draft to the Australian and international buying bench that assembles for the Jan. 7 to 10 sale, the first of the 2015 Australasian yearling sale series.  Watson, who runs the 4046 hectare (10,000 acre) property with his wife Sian...

New Federal Medication Bill Introduced

A week after New York congressman Paul Tonko introduced federal legislation to establish uniform drug and medication standards in Thoroughbred racing, three other representatives introduced similar legislation Thursday. Representatives Joe Pitts (R-PA), Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), and Anna Eshoo (D-CA) introduced the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act of 2015 to regulate/prohibit substances, drugs, medications, and treatments that may be used in racing, according to a release from the American Horse Council. Like Tonko's bill, the legislation designates the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), giving the private agency the authority to permit/prohibit the...
