Breeders' Cup Possible for D'Amato Duo

Trainer Phil D'Amato reported One Magic Philly (Good Magic) and Hang the Moon (Uncle Mo) were doing well after their graded stakes victories Saturday at Santa Anita and both fillies are under consideration for Breeders' Cup engagements.

Hang the Moon earned a fees-paid berth in the GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf with her upset win in Saturday's GII Rodeo Drive Stakes.

“She paid her way [to the Breeders' Cup]. If she continues to train well, that's where we'll go,” D'Amato said Sunday morning.

One Magic Philly won her stakes debut while making just her fourth career start in the GIII Chillingworth Stakes. The 3-year-old filly engaged Grade I winner Sweet Azteca (Sharp Azteca) from the opening bell, put away that favored rival near the quarter pole, and went on to win comfortably by 2 3/4 lengths.

“We expected it would be a smaller field and were hoping she would run well,” D'Amato said. “It just worked out that our filly broke sharp and was right on top of [Sweet Azteca]. She was able to pressure her and win the battle.”

D'Amato said One Magic Philly is being considered for the GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint.

“We'll see. We either will point to the Breeders' Cup or wait for the [Dec. 26 GI] La Brea,” D'Amato said.

Sweet Azteca was the 1-9 favorite in the Chillingworth, but faded to last on a muggy Saturday in Arcadia.

“She seems to be doing OK this morning,” trainer Michael McCarthy said of the filly Sunday. “I think the heat may have got to her a little bit yesterday.”

McCarthy said Sweet Azteca is still under consideration for the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint.

“First we'll see how she is over the next few days. But by all accounts, everything seems to be well,” McCarthy said.
