Bateman Colt to Cast a Spell

Across the country, 3-year-olds in Victoria will also have a shot at Guineas glory tomorrow in the G1 Australian Guineas at Flemington. Wandjina (Aus) (Snitzel {Aus}) stamped himself a colt to watch when taking the G3 C S Hayes S. first-up over a furlong shorter here Feb. 21, and he looks to become the latest Group 1 winner for trainer Gai Waterhouse and owners Edmund and Belinda Bateman, who shelled out A$1 million for him at Inglis Easter in 2013 and who also campaigned Group 1-winning sprinter and young sire Foxwedge (Aus). Kermadec (NZ) (Teofilo {Ire}) ships in from Sydney off a second in the G2 Hobartville S. Feb. 21, and he won the G3 Carbine Club S. over this track and trip in November. Alpine Eagle (Aus) (High Chaparral {Ire}) has lost just once in five starts, and he looks to extend his win streak to four tomorrow. He was last seen taking the G2 Autumn Classic over 1800 meters at Caulfield Feb. 28.Minnesinger (Aus) (Lonhro {Aus}) was second that day off a pair of wins earlier in the year, and should have a good shot out of barrier three. Fontein Ruby (Aus) (Turffontein {Aus}) is one of a pair of fillies to line up, and while the fairer sex doesn't have a sparkling record in this event, Fontein Ruby's trainer, Robert Smerdon, conditioned the last filly to take it: the brilliant Mosheen (Aus) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) in 2012. Fontein Ruby won the G2 Edward Manifold S. over this track and trip in October, and was a first-up second in the G2 Armanasco S. at Caulfield last weekend.
