Gary and Mary West's impressive maiden winner American Pioneer (Awesome Again) prepped for an intended start in the GI Arkansas Derby Apr. 19 with a five-furlong work in 1:01 at Oaklawn Wednesday.
“We don't need times now,” said trainer Wayne Catalano, who referred to the breeze as a maintenance work. “We don't need a fast work now. We know he's fast, right?”
Second behind GII Louisiana Derby third Dazzling gem (Misremembered) in his Oaklawn unveiling Jan. 18, American Pioneer was a decisive 3 3/4-length graduate next out there Mar. 19.
