Dual Group 1-winning miler Kermadec (NZ) (Teofilo {Ire}–Hy Fuji {Aus}, by Fuji Kiskei {Jpn}) has been bought by Darley Australia and retired to its Kelvinside Farm for the 2016 breeding season. The 4-year-old will stand for A$22,000 alongside his sire.
An NZ$260,000 yearling, Kermadec won Flemington's G3 Carbine Club S. in his third start in the spring of his 3-year-old campaign, and was beaten short margins the following season in the G1 Australian Guineas and G1 George Ryder S. before causing a mild upset to win the A$3-million G1 Doncaster Mile at The Championships last year. The dark bay bested four Group 1 winners, including Lucia Valentina (NZ) (Savabeel {Aus}), in the G1 George Main S. the following spring, and put together a respectable autumn campaign this year. He finished third in the G1 Canterbury S. and second to stablemate Winx (Aus) (Street Cry {Ire}) in the George Ryder before faltering when last of 15 in the Doncaster, but rebounded to be third, beaten 3/4 of a length, in last weekend's G1 All Aged S. Kermadec retires with more than A$2.9 million in the bank.
“We are thrilled to have purchased Teofilo's best son, Kermadec, to stand alongside his father at Kelvinside this season,” said Alastair Pulford, Darley Australia's head of sales. “Teofilo has quickly become a global star for us and we are very excited to have him returning to Australia this season, as are many of our clients. Kermadec was a horse of exceptional quality who was able to win a Group 3 on Derby day at Flemington on just his third start. He went on to win two of the best Group 1 mile races in Australia with only the superstar Winx denying him a third win at the elite level in George Ryder last month.”
