Dig Deep was second on debut at Gulfstream Feb. 6 after dueling on the lead for much of the running, then filled out the exacta again Feb. 27 behind subsequent GI Florida Derby runner-up Majesto (Tiznow). The third time was the charm Apr. 2, as the homebred chased a strong pace before coming home to an impressive 2 1/2-length score, earning a 94 Beyer Speed Figure for the maiden-breaking effort.
Away as the 11-10 second choice in this stakes debut, the bay stalked front-running favorite Quijote closely into the first turn before backing off just a bit through a :23.57 quarter-mile. Nudged along just a bit down the backside by Javier Castellano, Dig Deep drew on even terms with the leader midway around the far turn before taking over into the stretch.
