Owen Almighty Shows Mettle In Ellis Park Juvenile Throwdown

Owen Almighty | Coady Media

Owen Almighty (Speightstown), who won his June 20 Churchill Downs debut by 3 1/2 lengths, stepped up to take his stakes debut comfortably. After a slight bobble at the start under Cristian Torres, he established a striking position while three-wide stalking Politicallycorrect's (Violence) pace set in :22.46 and :45.79. Finishing strongly under Torres's drive, the 3-5 favorite in a field of seven pulled away from the 3-2 second choice Politicallycorrect in the final furlong to garner a 4 3/4-length tally.

“He's certainly taking us in the right direction from just two starts,” Trainer Brian Lynch said. “I'd have to think the Iroquois would be next after this race. Our goal with him is to get to the Breeders' Cup Juvenile this fall and he's on the right path.”

His dam, a half-sister to the El Corredor gelding Mac The Man (SW, $207,830), finished second in the 2020 GII Fair Grounds Oaks. Owen Almighty, who was hammered to Sycamore Hall Farm for $360,000 as a weanling at the 2022 Keeneland November Breeding Sale, is her first foal. She has a yearling colt by Constitution and produced a Not This Time colt earlier this year.
