Gleneagles's Palladium Gets Up Late in the Deutsches Derby

Repeating the trick of coming stand's side to win in Liberty Racing colours, Palladium (Ger) (Gleneagles {Ire}–Path Wind {Fr}, by Anabaa) got up late to provide his owners with back-to-back renewals of Hamburg's G1 Idee Deutsches Derby on Sunday. Only fourth in Cologne's G2 Union-Rennen last month, the Henk Grewe trainee benefitted from being close to the tepid early pace set by the G2 Derby Italiano hero Borna (Fr) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}) before Thore Hammer-Hansen's calculated risk after the home turn. Losing lengths by crossing to the other rail, the 23-1 shot finished with a flourish to deny the long-time leader by a neck and the staying-on Augustus (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}) a further head margin.

Palladium is the fifth Fahrhof-bred Derby winner after Surumu (Ger), Lagunas (GB), Acatenango (Ger) and Lavirco (Ger), and he was the first for first for Hammer-Hansen, son of former jockey Lennart, who was overwhelmed afterwards.

“I am absolutely speechless, it is the dream of a lifetime, such a great moment, my parents are here,” he managed to say, while Henk Grewe added, “We actually had more confidence in Wilko, who had worked much better than Palladium but this one seems to save himself for the races. It was an excellent ride from Thore Hammer-Hansen.”

Liberty Racing founder Lars-Wilhelm Baumgarten added, “We believed in wonders and a wonder has occurred. Nobody really expected this–our biggest thanks go out to Grewe.”

Pedigree Notes

Palladium's listed-winning dam Path Wind, whose career-defining moment came when runner-up in the G1 Premio Lydia Tesio, is also responsible for the dual listed winner Panjari (Ire) (Camelot {GB}).
She is a half to the listed-winning Spanish champion Wild King (Ger) (Samum {Ger}) and to the dam of the multiple group 2-placed Waterford (Ire) (Awtaad {Ire}).

The third dam is the excellent producer Wild Romance (Ger) (Alkalde {Ger}), dam of the G3 Prix Miesque winner and G1 Preis der Diana runner-up White Rose (Ger) (Platini {Ger}) and the G2 EuropaChampionat winner Wild Side (Ger) (Sternkoenig {Ire}) whose progeny list is headed by the triple group-winning G1 Prix Vermeille runner-up Wild Coco (Ger) (Shirocco {Ger}). Path Wind also has the unraced 2-year-old colt Path Of Soldier (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}), who was a €64,000 purchase by Helmut von Finck at the BBAG September Yearling Sale, and a colt foal by Japan (GB).
