NELSON BUNKER HUNT DIES
Nelson Bunker Hunt, a Texas oilman and a prominent Thoroughbred owner and breeder on both sides of the Atlantic, died Tuesday at the age of 88 after a long battle with Alzheimers. Hunt was once amongst the world's wealthiest men, having inherited a multibillion-dollar fortune from his father, the legendary Texas oilman H.L. Hunt. Hunt built on his father's oil and gas holdings, but went into bankruptcy after a failed attempt to corner the silver market with his brother, Herbert.
Hunt was the British flat champion owner in 1973 and 1974, and won the 1976 Epsom Derby with Empery (Vaguely Noble), providing legendary rider Lester Piggott with his seventh renewal of the Classic. Other luminaries to race in Hunt's colors on the European turf include the great race mare and producer Dahlia (Vaguely Noble) as well as Youth (Ack Ack) and Exceller (Vaguely Noble). Hunt owned the 8000-acre Bluegrass Farm in Lexington, Kentucky.
