Klaravich Stable's Domestic Spending (GB) (Kingman {GB}), let go at 7-1, got the best of a host of challengers before just holding off the late-rushing Gufo (Declaration of War) to win the second Saratoga Derby Saturday at Saratoga. The win was the second on Saturday's card for Klaravich and trainer Chad Brown, who unveiled another promising son of Kingman, the 2-year-old Public Sector, to win the day's second race.
“In the paddock, I was confident that he would run a big race because he's never acted better or more confident,” said Brown, who won three races Saturday at Saratoga. “I was real proud of the horse.”
Heavily favored Decorated Invader (Declaration of War), Domestic Spending and No Word (Silent Name {Jpn}) all looked to be waiting for someone else to take the lead heading into the first turn and it was longshot Get Smokin (Get Stormy) who obliged, spurting up to take control of the early going. Decorated Invader was content to stalk from second as the gray gelding set fractions of :23.41 and :47.76 and Domestic Spending and No Word rated patiently some five lengths off the pacesetter. Decorated Invader reeled in Get Smokin turning for home and, while Domestic Spending shadowed the favorite's move, No Word was finding running room down along the rail as a slew of rivals were picking up steam from the back of the pack. Domestic Spending forged to the lead and Colonel Liam (Liam's Map) made a menacing move from the center of the course, but it was Gufo a path further out who was the biggest danger, uncorking a furious late rush to just miss.
“He broke more sharp than we thought and were very close to the pace, so I tried to relax my horse and he relaxed very well,” said winning jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. “I could feel [the pressure] a little bit in the stretch, but he responded really well, so I knew I had horse. He always finishes strong, so I kept riding. We got the jump and he held them until the end.”
Domestic Spending was a first-out winner at Tampa Bay Downs in February and closed strongly to add a one-mile allowance at Belmont June 7. He was third behind Decorated Invader and Get Smokin in the July 18 GII National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame S. last time out.
“He was a little closer to the pace this time, which is what we wanted to do last time and it just didn't work out,” Brown said. “Irad and I were in the paddock talking about how much the horse has matured. He was real quirky when he was younger. We had to geld him just to get him to train willingly. Every month that's gone by this year, I've seen him really mature.”
Both of Klaravich Stable's winners Saturday were purchased at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, with Domestic Spending costing 300,000gns in 2018 and Public Sector 170,000gns in 2019. It was also at that auction that the operation purchased multiple Grade I winner Newspaperofrecord (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) for 200,000gns in 2017.
Pedigree Notes:
Domestic Spending is the only foal out of stakes-winning Urban Castle, who died in 2017. The mare was a daughter of multiple Group 1-placed Cloud Castle, who produced multiple group placed Reverie Solitaire (Ire) (Nashwan) and group winner Queen's Best (GB) (King's Best), dam of 2016 GI Breeders' Cup F/M Turf winner Queen's Trust (GB) (Dansili {GB}).
Domestic Spending is the 13th graded/group winner for 2014 G1 St James's Palace S. winner Kingman. The stallion has been represented this year by G1 Prix d'Ispahan winner Persian King (Ire) and G1 St James's Palace S. winner Palace Pier (GB), as well as three 'TDN Rising Stars.'
