As part of the upcoming Expo in Goffs next month the ITBA, in association with sponsors Red Mills are launching a Dragons' Den style competition. Well known businessman Sean Gallagher, who was one of the original 'Dragons' on the Irish TV series, has been recruited to lend his expertise in judging the competition which recognises the entrepreneurial spirit, innovation, diversity and talent of equine businesses across the thoroughbred sector. The competition will test industry leaders of all ages through the acknowledgment of innovative business processes, product development, enterprise, sustainability, marketing, targets, route to market channels, scalability and overall business success. The competition will be divided into three categories as follows:

  • Award for innovative initiative for breeders under 30
  • Best start up award serving the thoroughbred industry
  • Best established SME serving the thoroughbred industry

Applicants are sought nationwide and are asked to outline in no more than 500 words their operations, success and achievements for each of the following criteria

  • Demonstration of a sales and marketing plan and how that has contributed to growth of the business.
  • Demonstrate the long term vision for the company, outlining strategy and a business model for sustainable growth.
  • Demonstration of innovation or innovative thinking or technology in driving and expanding a business giving clear business performance targets and measurement.

At least one entrant in each of the three categories will then qualify to participate in a short presentation at the ITBA Expo on Saturday Jan. 27 in front of a panel of leading entrepreneurs and executives from the world of business and from this an overall winner will be chosen. Along with free PR generated throughout the industry media and a free marketing opportunity to the wider bloodstock community there will be prizes for each category winner and of course for the overall winner. Mentoring for each finalist will be provided post event in relevant areas of expertise. Applications Forms must be submitted not later than Jan. 8.

Commenting on the competition ITBA CEO Shane O'Dwyer said, “We are looking forward to this initiative which gives a unique opportunity for exhibitors and the wider bloodstock community to make a pitch 'to be the best they can' in front of a panel of expert dragons. We are delighted to have the expertise of Sean Gallagher on board and look forward to announcing other big names in the coming weeks. It is important we embrace technology and nurture future leaders and this is a tremendous opportunity for all to get involved in something really exciting.”
