McKinzie (Street Sense)'s 7-2 odds for this debut seemed quite generous as he stormed clear in the stretch to become the second “TDN Rising Star” of the day. Named for longtime Los Alamitos racing executive Brad McKinzie, who passed away in August after a battle with cancer, the bay raced out wide in mid-pack off a sharp first quarter in :22.38. Picking off rivals to stick his nose in front as they hit the half in :45.24, he charged clear in the lane under confident handling from Hall of Famer Mike Smith to win for fun.
A $170,000 KEESEP buy, McKinzie is out of MGSW & MGISP Runway Model (Petionville), who was purchased by breeder Summer Wind Farm for $2.7 million carrying her first foal by Storm Cat at the 2006 Keeneland November sale. The 15-year-old mare, a half-sister to SW & MGSP Mambo Train (Kingmambo), has since produced the yearling colt Lock Box (Super Saver) and a weanling filly by Liam's Map.
