+EARTH (c, 2, Orb–Mullins Bay, by Speightstown) rallied strongly in the stretch to get up in the waning strides and become the first winner for his sought-after freshman sire. Showing a steady series of breezes at Palm Beach Downs going back to mid-April, including a five-furlong bullet in 1:01 2/5 (1/8) there May 29, the $190,000 Fasig-Tipton July purchase was made the 9-5 second choice and came away a bit awkwardly from the rail. Recovering to sit third off of a contested :21.75 quarter, the dark bay ranged up to challenge from the three-path nearing the turn for home. Charging strongly into the final furlong, he encountered a game rival in pacesetter Pocket Book (Into Mischief), but steadily wore that foe down to prevail by a neck. Earth is the first foal out of an unraced full-sister to MGSW turf sprinter Bridgetown, while third dam Empress Aly (Alydar) is a half to 1991 GI Kentucky Derby hero Strike the Gold. Mullins Bay, a $225,000 purchase at the same sale as Earth, produced an Oxbow colt last term and a filly by Raison d'Etat May 1. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $24,000.
