Returning on just two weeks rest after an allowance win at Churchill on GI Kentucky Derby day, No Mo Dough handled this step up in class with aplomb, mowing down his competition late to spring the upset. Biding his time in second last early, the bay spotted the field by several lengths as True Timber led the way through sensible early splits of :23.73 and :48.53. The Graham Motion pupil came alive on the backstretch run, making eye-catching progress up the outside to move into contention. Six wide turning for home, No Mo Dough unleashed a powerful late turn of foot to inhale his competition and motor clear for a decisive victory.
“I really liked this horse today,” Motion said. “Jose [Ortiz] rides him with such confidence. He showed a lot of ability as a baby and then we gave him the time. Jose told me the other day at Churchill the horse didn't even know what he was doing and he still won. He just came out of the race so well. Today he galloped really strongly. I think he won kind easily. He's a very nice colt.”
A debut winner sprinting at Laurel Mar. 12, No Mo Dough checked in fourth next out in a seven-panel Keeneland allowance Apr. 12 and cleared his first-level allowance condition with a half-length score in a sloppy 1 1/16-mile test on Derby day. The winner, whose dam is a half to MGISW Wekiva Springs (Runaway Groom), has a juvenile full-brother named More Mo. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by Fasig-Tipton.
