To be truly appealing, every Derby needs a likeable outsider who was a low-budget auction buy or hails from an off-the-beaten-path racing circuit, and with Conquest Mo Money you get both underdog storylines rolled into one. This $8,500 dispersal purchase (a New York-bred competing in New Mexico), outran his odds with a gutsy Arkansas Derby second that now has his owners considering supplementing the $200,000 Triple Crown late nomination fee to get him into the Derby. At Oaklawn, he established good position four wide and in hand, backed off a beat midway down the backstretch, lost and re-took the lead, fought and brushed with Malagacy (Shackleford) off the turn and through the lane, drifted out despite right-handed encouragement, and was a jump from winning when Classic Empire steamed by him in the shadow of the wire. Although he did not race at age two, Conquest Mo Money has five route races under his belt since Jan. 6, beating up on lesser Sunland Park foes before back-to-back seconds in graded stakes. He's aggressive on the lead but not all-out crazy to attain the front; the toughness he showed in the Arkansas Derby will stand him in good stead in the 20-horse mash-up in Louisville should his connections pay big bucks for the privilege of starting.
