Following a lifetime's worth of Classics near-misses, owner Ahmed Zayat and his family finally achieved glory when their homebred American Pharoah (Pioneerof the Nile) validated 5-2 favoritism in Saturday's 141st running of the GI Kentucky Derby before a record crowd at Churchill Downs. Finnegan's Wake (Powerscourt {GB}) and TDN Rising Star Dame Dorothy (Bernardini) were the day's other Grade I winners, while Private Zone (Macho Uno) posted yet another gutsy win in the GII Churchill Downs S. Across the Atlantic at Headquarters, Gleneagles (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) gave trainer Aidan O'Brien a record-equalling seventh win in the G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas, while a field of 13 fillies is set for Sunday's fillies' counterpart. All that and more In Today's TDN!
